Saturday Stories: Hellboy

The Husband and I finally saw a new movie! Hellboy with David Harbour as Hellboy.Hellboy Poster

I have to be honest here: When I think about Hellboy, I see Ron Perlman’s version. I was… uncertain what I expected this movie to be. I j knew it wasn’t going to be the same because this wasn’t Ron Perlman’s Hellboy and I kept an open mind. Still, there was some prejudice there.

This movie a lot of people might call a reboot to the franchise. All the other movies do not exist. This Hellboy began fresh. There was a loose homage to the first Hellboy movie at the beginning as well as the discovery of Hellboy of course.

While watching this movie it was evident just how physical a role it was because the main character was tossed about like a rag doll by a giant, electrocuted, and batted like a Wiffle ball. Just like in the comics.

This incarnation of Hellboy is a little more – a lot more – bloody than the previous movies. Again, this is following through with the comics. It isn’t over-the-top either. It is just right, like Baby Bear’s porridge.

Now, what am I going to say about Milla Jovovich? I am a fan of hers down to my toes. So, I have to say I was a little disappointed with how little interaction there was between the wicked witch (Jovovich) and Hellboy (Harbour). Most of her scenes were CG and special effects. [sad face] Still, it seemed as though she was enjoying the part of the immortal witch.

However, the scene that completely creeped me out was when Baba Yaga paid a visit to Hellboy. Yeah, that witch needs some serious psychological help.

Hellboy (reboot) four stars – * * * *
