There is excitement surrounding this weekend. Many view it as the first weekend of summer. The truth behind the weekend is honoring the fallen men and women of our armed forces and celebrating and honoring the men and women who luckily did not have to give the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.
When I was growing up, Memorial Day was always a day to decorate the graves of the people who mattered to us in our family. Saturday morning would be spent mowing the graveyard and decorating the family graves. The afternoon would be filled with grilling, cooking, good food, good friends, and a gathering of family.
Now Memorial Day weekend has become a time of getting together in family reunions I simply don’t get to attend, but my heart is there.
So, this weekend – remember the fallen, remember the survivors, and your family, past and present. Make wonderful, good memories for the future with this first weekend of summer.
